Innovative cables developed at this center are expected to reach global markets with an export target of $100 million by 2025.

Nexans has selected its Tuzla factory as a strategic hub for fire-resistant cable production and R&D. The fire testing laboratory established in Tuzla is recognized as a center of excellence within Nexans’ global production network.

Fire-resistant cables developed at the Tuzla R&D center are designed to meet the highest global standards and are exported worldwide. Nexans Turkey aims to achieve $100 million in export revenue from this innovative product range by 2025.

A Fire Occurs Every 30 Seconds in Europe

In Europe, a fire occurs every 30 seconds, with electrical fires accounting for 21.2% of these incidents. In Turkey alone, financial losses from building fires reach 1.17 billion TRY annually. Fires not only cause material damage but also lead to significant loss of life, with approximately 4,000 deaths and 134,000 injuries recorded each year. Increasing electricity consumption is amplifying fire risks on a global scale, posing a serious threat to modern life.

Atilla Kurtiş, General Manager of Nexans Turkey, Levant, and Central Asia, emphasized that Nexans’ fire-resistant cables have set export records in Turkey and affirmed the company’s ongoing efforts to contribute to the country’s sustainable future and economy. Kurtiş stated: “As Nexans, we are committed to providing solutions for energy generation, transmission, distribution, and usage from renewable sources, supporting electrification, and advancing energy transformation. Furthermore, we have pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. To reach this goal, we rely on our E3 management model, which balances environmental responsibility, employee engagement, and business performance. This model enables us to manage our company responsibly for the sustainability of both our operations and the planet.”

The Goal is to Prevent Cable-Related Fires, Their Spread, and Poisoning from Smoke

With its Fire Safety product range, Nexans is setting a new standard for fire safety not only in Turkey but globally. Low-fire-hazard cables slow the spread of fires, while fire-resistant cables ensure the operation of critical systems for up to three hours, enabling safe evacuations. For example, emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, or fire response systems can continue to function for up to three hours even under fire conditions, thanks to fire-resistant cables, ultimately saving lives.

Additionally, Nexans Fire Safety products limit smoke release and acid emissions, significantly reducing the risk of smoke inhalation, which accounts for 80% of fire-related fatalities.

Turkey's Strategic Importance for the World

Atilla Kurtiş, General Manager of Nexans Turkey, Levant, and Central Asia, shared advanced technology behind fire-resistant cables during a press conference at the Tuzla Factory. "Fire safety is not just a product for us; it is a commitment. Every day, we are living with more cables and more systems. This transformation also increases safety needs. As Nexans, we aim to provide the most advanced technology for projects with high safety requirements, such as hospitals, schools, shopping malls, hotels, and data centers. With our fire safety R&D centers in two locations in Turkey, we are leading both local and global markets. The fire-resistant cables developed in Tuzla represent high standards not only for Turkey but also for global markets. By 2025, we aim to generate $100 million in export revenue from these products," he said.

Success in Tuzla and Nexans' Global Goals

Nexans Turkey’s factory in Tuzla stands out not only for its production capacity but also for its strength in R&D and innovation. The fire testing laboratory located in Tuzla is considered a reference center for Nexans' factories worldwide. In 2024, the production and R&D center in Tuzla was awarded the "Most Digital Factory" award and has solidified its leadership in the industry through significant R&D investments. According to Turkish Time, Nexans Turkey ranks among the top 10 companies with the highest investment in R&D.

Fully Compliant with European Union Standards

Nexans’ fire safety cables are manufactured in compliance with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and meet global standards in criteria such as fire resistance, smoke density, and acidity, positioning the company as a leader in the industry.
